Accident reconstruction expert Robert McMahon testified this week that there is no evidence in the black box that bus driver John Tomaszewski used his brakes before the vehicle hit the bridge over Onondaga Lake Parkway, NY. The accident killed four passengers in September 2010.  McMahon, with the Amherst Police Department in Erie County, testified in the case against Tomaszewski who is charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Florida Legislation On Malpractice Lawsuits

Florida requires a patient to submit a statement from a medical expert in medical malpractice lawsuits. The Florida legislature is now working on changes to further restrain malpractice lawsuits.  Rep. Matt Gaetz says the legislation will encourage doctors to practice in the state but critics say is will have a detrimental effect on patient's privacy rights.

Computer Experts On Typosquatting

The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, enacted in 1999, made it illegal to register or use a domain name confusingly similar to a trademark or  personal name with the intent to cause fraud. 

Typosquatting is a form of cybersquatting that relies on typographical errors to direct internet users to the cybersquatter's website. Computer experts say it is a new way to steal identities, particularly when shopping online. 

Finance Expert On Governor Brown's Pension Plan

Finance expert Mike Genest commented on Governor Jerry Brown's public worker retirement plan saying the idea is fair because some of the risk is born by the employee.  Genest served for four years as Director of the California Department of Finance under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and opened Genest Consulting in January of 2010 to provide advice, analysis and advocacy on fiscal and policy issues affecting state and local government.
