Product Liability Expert To Testify In GE Case

Product liability expert Peter Chen will testify for Joseph and Nancy Bertrand in  a Massachusetts lawsuit against General Electric.  Federal judge Judge Richard Stearns has allowed  the Bertrands to sue General Electric over a stove they claim one of their cats turned on.  The resulting fire destroyed their house. 

Engineering Expert To Investigate Underground Explosions

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is a regulatory authority with a statutory mandate to ensure safe, adequate, and proper utility services at reasonable rates for customers in the state. The NJBPU voted recently to have Jersey Central Power & Light appoint an engineering expert to investigate the underground explosions that have occurred in Morristown.  There have been a series of events including a manhole cover that blew 30 feet in the air.


Environmental Experts On Fracking

Environmental expert and Duke Professor Robert Jackson published a study recently that showed very high levels of methane gas in groundwater near fracking operations in Pennsylvania.  Texas was the first state to authorize public disclosure of chemicals used to break up shale gas formations during hydraulic fracturing and now the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has new rules governing the oil & gas industry practice of hydraulic fracturing.  

Tom Richmond, Administrator of the Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation (BOGC), says this means increased transparency for the public about the chemical ingredients used in the practice. "The new rules place Montana at the forefront of a national movement toward mandatory disclosure of all the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing.  Operators in Montana will be required to tell us everything they're using, not just a limited subset of chemicals," said Richmond.

Engineering Expert & Chicago Copper Smelter

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has filed a complaint against H. Kramer & Co. over dangerous levels of lead emissions from its copper smelter in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.  On Friday Madigan obtained an agreed preliminary injunction order against the company, requiring it to immediately reduce lead emissions from its plant and conduct a ventilation study by an outside engineering expert.

Expert Testimony In Oracle v. SAP lawsuit

District Court Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton (N.D. Cal.) overturned the $1.3 B Oracle Award against the German software company SAP. Oracle's expert calculated its loss as $408.7 million while SAP's expert  argued $28 million. Judge Hamilton has ordered the lawsuit be retried, unless Oracle agrees to a settlement offer of $272 million.
